New Gloucester boys soccer head coach Art Sims was victorious in his Fishermen debut as his team blanked Methuen, 3-0, in the season opener.
Senior Aaron Horne scored in the first half, assisted by senior Nick Paige. Senior Kyle Hurd scored in the second half from junior Paulo Lopes and junior Logan Horne rounded out the scoring with a goal from senior Brian Theriault.
Senior goalkeeper Chase Kelly made five stops for the shutout.
"I was happy with the result," said Sims. "We have some improvements to make but we're making progress."

MANCHESTER ESSEX 6, IPSWICH 1
The Hornets started the season in fine fashion with a dominant victory in first-year coach Andrea Slaven's first game. Tasha Lyne and Caroline Kiley had two goals each, while Piper Browne and Kyle Marsh had a goal each. Ellen Burgess played a strong game defensively.

The Vikings (0-1) lost their season opener at their home course — the Rockport Golf Club. Jeff Piraino led Rockport (26 points), while Caleb Tanson (18 points), Jacob O'Maley (17 points), Phil MacArthur (16 points), Colby Foster (14 points) and Brendan Wall (12 points) also scored points in the loss.
GLOUCESTER wins easy
It was a lop-sided win for the Fishermen in their season opener in Lynn. Tyler Conigliari led his team with 38 points, while Geoff Kennedy, Sean Kennedy, Matt Martin, Connor Cranston, Nick Aiello and Jesse Francis also won their respective matches.

The Hornets put up a good fight in their first match of the season against the defending Cape Ann League Large champs. Freshman Miles Wood shot even par for 36 points, while Connor Howlett had 29 points and Josh Christopher and Corey Barstis had 26 points each. Eighth graders Jeffrey Durkin and Pete Morton had 18 and 16 points respectively in their first ever varsity match.
