Crunch Time

NEC Hockey All Stars named

The Northeastern Conference Hockey All Stars were announced Tuesday and Gloucester was well represented with five players being named to the team.

Earning a spot on the team were forwards Mike Russo, Johnny Interrante and Ben Favazza along with defensemen Coltyn Rivas and Matt Brennan.

Russo led the team in scoring and was one of the top five scorers in the Northeastern Conference North this season with 25 points (14 goals, 21 assists). Interrante was named to the team for a third straight season as he scored a career high 26 points in his senior campaign. Favazza also had a stellar year with 23 points on the season.

On the defensive end Brennan was a bit of an unsung hero providing solid defense and few mistakes night in and night out. Rivas, on the other hand, was a jack of all trades playing both forward and defense and playing both well, his skating ability made him one of the more dangerous players on the team.

Beverly Sophomore forward Conor Irving was named NEC North MVP with Swampscott's 100 point scorer Gino Cresta getting the honor in the NEC South.

Danvers head coach Kevin Brown was named NEC North coach of the year with Marblehead coach Bob Jackson taking home NEC Sough coach of the year honors.

No thanks to MVP award

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, the runner up in National League MVP voting in 2011, says he does not want the award if reigning MVP Ryan Braun is found guilty of steroid use.

"I feel like that would be by default," said Kemp. "I wish I would've won it just by them voting me and me being the MVP. That would be special. But hopefully, I will have the same type of year or even better and win it straight up this year, with us making the playoffs."

Mike Greenwell he is not but if Braun's numbers aren't legit, award or not Kemp is the National MVP for 2011.
