Gloucester softball holds on against Beverly

Gloucester (3-6) held of a strong Beverly surge in the last three innings but came away with an 8-6 win Wednesday. The Fishermen finished off the contest allowing no runs after the Panthers loaded the bases with nobody out in the inning.

"It was a solid team effort and we consistently made the plays we were supposed to make," Gloucester head coach John Nicastro said.

Gloucester broke out the offense with seven straight runs first five innings.

Katie Russo picked up the win for Gloucester in her first career varsity start. Clare Pleuler led the offense going 4-for-4 with a home run, Kerri Brewer had three hits while Emily Caisse chipped in two hits.

BASEBALL

The Vikings (5-3) bounced back nicely after falling to Northeast on Wednesday. Tucker Meredith picked up the win on the mound going the distance while allowing just four hits.

Head coach John Parisi called outfielder Nick Scatterday the player of the game as he had two hits and a pair of stolen bases. Meredith and Adam Balzarini also chipped in RBI hits for Rockport.

The Hornets fall to 4-4 with the loss. Matt Corwin powered the offense going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Jon Browning and Joe Burgess both went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

TRACK

Gloucester improves to 4-1 with the win and qualified four for the state meet in the process. Josh Rudolph (400 hurdles, 59.6), Jacob Holscher (mile, 4:37), Mike Sheehan (high jump, 5'10"), and Calvin Kipruto (400, 52.6) all turned in first place finishes and qualified for the Division 2 State meet.

Wes Dunn (2-mile, 10:39), Everest Crawford (800, 2:12.3) and Pete Mondello (javelin) also turned in first place finishes for the Fishermen.

GIRLS TENNIS

Gloucester swept the doubles matches in the loss as the No. 1 tandem of Eleanor Keller and Maryka Gillis (6-2, 6-4) and Jill MacDonald and Rose Margetson (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) picked up wins for the Fishermen.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Danielle Turner and Rachel Rowe played well in defeat as there were several hotly contested and close games in their respective match.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Melodie Orrell led the Gloucester offense with four goals and an assist. Julienne Orrell had two goals while Caity O'Leary chipped in a goal. Anna Oshiro, who had an assist, played well in the defensive midfield.
