Crunch Time

Cahill on the Navs

Brett Cahill is continuing his successful 2012 season on the baseball diamond. Fresh off his Sophomore season at Salem State where he was a MASCAC All Star and All New England selection, Cahill is playing for the North Shore Navigators, who play at Fraser Field in Lynn.

Wednesday night Cahill scored what turned out to be the game winning run in the Navigators (5-1) 5-1 win over the Brockton Rox at Campanelli Stadium. Cahill led off the seventh inning by reaching on an error and was driven by by a Jake McGuiggan double.

Losing its Luster

Has anything in sports lost more meaning then a no hitter over the last five years. Wednesday night San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain tossed the second perfect game of season and the fifth no hitter. It seems like every night we are on no hitter watch and good pitchers aren't necessarily throwing them (Cain is most certainly a very good pitcher). Over the last three seasons there have been 14 no hitters tossed and the 2012 season isn't even half over yet.

Here's all you need to know about no hitters, Bud Smith and Jose Jimenez have one, Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens do not.

All Star Correction

The Northeastern Conference and Cape Ann League All Stars listed in Wednesday's paper was two players short. Anna Heffernan and Michelle Quinn, both Gloucester girls track stars, were also Northeastern Conference All Stars this spring.

On the Air

Gloucester soccer/softball standout Clare Pleuler will be appearing on North Shore 104.9's North Shore Sports Desk Saturday morning (8:00-9:00 a.m.) as the Cape Ann Savings Bank North Shore Student Athlete of the Week.
