---- — The McGovern Bowl, a no pads tackle football tournament, kicked off for the 14th time on Saturday at Magnolia Woods.
The Bowl featured six teams and 60 plus players ranging from ages 20-26, mostly from the Cape Ann area but some coming from all over the Northeast as far away as New Jersey.
The tournament featured a round robin format with two divisions of three, the top four teams moving on to the playoff round. “The Underdogs”, a group of Gloucester guys, won Saturday’s tournament.
The McGovern Bowl began in 1999 with a group of youths from Gloucester playing pickup football on Thanksgiving weekend, it has now turned into a full blown tournament that has become so competitive Palazola’s Sporting Goods in Gloucester helped sponsor the event providing equipment, footballs and cones.
