Crunch Time

Sigs gets a title

Duane Sigsbury has landed that elusive Super Bowl championship. The Cathedral High School head football coach, and former Manchester Essex boys basketball coach, took home the hardware on Saturday at Gillette Stadium as Cathedral came away with a 22-20 win over Madison Park in the Division 4A Super Bowl.

Cathedral, who finished the season with a record of 11-2, was led by quarterback Kejonte Hickman. The sophomore carried the ball 46 times for 249 yards.

The win for Cathedral comes a year after being robbed in the Division 4A Super Bowl against Blue Hills in 2011 when a Cathedral player was whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty for pumping his fist after breaking free for what he thought was the game winning touchdown.

Around Average

The NEC/CAL had a solid showing in the 2012 MIAA football playoffs with four teams posting a 3-3 record.

Tier 2 winner Beverly was the big winner taking home a Division 2A Super Bowl title, Tier 4 Lynnfield made the Super Bowl after knocking off Tier 3 champ Amesbury in the playoffs. Lynnfield lost to Bishop Feehan in the Division 3A Super Bowl Saturday.

Masconomet also ran into an eventual champ in the playoffs falling to Everett in Division 1A.

Jock school

MIT is well accustomed to being No. 1. Most of its science-related majors are among the best if not the best in the nation.

But No. 1 in men’s basketball? Yes, according to the latest NCAA Division 3 rankings.

Misguided Media

The media continues to embarrass itself with these leaps of faith on performance enhancing drugs. You often hear ... “We can safely assume Curt Schilling never took ...” Or, “I’d be stunned if Rob Ninkovich ever...”

You have zero idea, so don’t even go there. You can be pudgy or thin and benefit from PEDs. You don’t have to be built like a Greek god.
