The Manchester Essex football team had four players named to the Northeastern Conference/Cape Ann League Tier 4 All Star team. Senior captains John Beardsley, Julian Flavin and Cory Burnham were named all stars at wide receiver, offensive line and defensive back respectively while junior Mike Davis was named an all star defensive linemen.
The quartet led the way all season for Manchester Essex setting the tone on both ends of the football. The Hornets finished the season with a 3-8 record but finished up strong winning two of their final three contests.
Burnham did just about everything for the Hornets this fall and while he was named an all star for his ball hawking skills in the defensive backfield, he carried the team's offense at the quarterback position.
Burnham led the team in passing with 1,138 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air, and in rushing with 610 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Burnham's favorite target in the passing game is Beardsley, and the senior speedster put up the numbers to back it up. Beardsley was amongst the top receivers on the North Shore finishing off the season with 33 receptions, 514 yards and seven touchdowns.
Over the 2012 season the duo established itself as one of the most fearsome passing combinations in the area.
“John and Cory have played a long time together,” Hornets head coach Mike Athanas said. “They’re good friends. They’re with each other a lot and they throw all summer. He knows his routes and Cory knows how to hit him, and they’ve done well as a duo all year."
Senior captain Flavin anchored a strong offensive and defensive line for the Hornets. A three year starter, Flavin was the leader and most experienced player on an offensive line that opened holes for a solid running game and protected quarterback Burnham in the passing game.
Flavin is also a standout in the middle of the defensive line making it tough on teams running the ball up the middle.
Davis, a junior, had a breakout season in 2012 establishing himself as a defensive end to be reckoned with in the NEC/CAL. Davis could get after the quarterback and stop the run giving Athanas a dual threat at the end position. Davis leads the pack of players returning to the Hornets in 2013.
