Savard, Wideman help Bruins ease past Islanders 4-1

BOSTON - Marc Savard and Dennis Wideman each had a goal and an assist to lift the Boston Bruins to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders last night.

Tim Thomas made 28 saves and Zdeno Chara added two assists for the Bruins, who have won four of six and will head into the All-Star break seeded seventh in the Eastern Conference.

The Islanders lost for the first time in five road games but have dropped four of six going into the break.

Wideman and Lucic scored goals 52 seconds apart to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead with 9:40 remaining in the first period. Wideman sidestepped Islanders forward Trent Hunter and wristed a shot by goalie Rick DiPietro. Lucic took a feed from Chara along the boards and squeezed his shot by a bewildered DiPietro.

Savard made it 3-0 when he scored from two feet above the goal line and beat DiPietro through the pads at 9:39 of the second period. He also assisted on Wideman's goal and has two goals and ten assists in seven games while leading the team with 56 points.

Phil Kessel capped off the scoring for Boston when his shot trickled through DiPietro's pads and nudged over the goal line for Boston's second power-play goal of the game and a 4-0 lead with 2:40 remaining in the second.

Boston won the season series from New York 3-1 while Thomas allowed only five goals.

Mike Sillinger scored the Islanders' lone goal when he beat Thomas inside the left post 6:45 into the third period.

Boston capped off a perfect week against New York teams after sweeping the Rangers in a home-and-home series last weekend.

Game notes: Wideman recorded his sixth point in the last six games while Chara recorded his eighth in that span. ... DiPietro has one win in his last five starts. ... Bruins forward Peter Schaefer was a healthy scratch. ... Lucic notched his first multi-goal effort and was named to the NHL Young Stars game. ... Miroslav Satan has one goal in 15 games.
