Ferriero helps BC claim 14th Beanpot title

BOSTON — Essex's Benn Ferriero can now call himself a Beanpot champion.

The Boston College junior forward and Governor Dummer product played a key role in the Eagles 6-5 overtime win over Harvard in the Beanpot final on Monday night at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Ferriero finished the tournament with two points (one goal, one assist) both coming in last Monday's 4-3 overtime win over Boston University.

Needless to say, Ferriero was excited that his team was able to win the prestigious Boston hockey tourney for the first time since 2004.

"It feels great to finally win (the Beanpot)," Ferriero said. "I feel awesome right now. I'm especially happy for our seniors. They hadn't won a Beanpot yet and to win it in their last chance is really special."

The heavily-favored Eagles found victory to be a little more difficult to come by than expected thanks to a hungry Harvard squad. Boston College had a 5-3 lead with less than 10 minutes to play, but the Crimson were able to erase that lead in five minutes and send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Eagles defensemen Nick Petrecki would net the game-winner, his second goal of the game, when he banged home a rebound.

Ferriero admitted that it was discouraging that his team squandered a two-goal third period lead, but also pointed out that they showed their strength in getting the victory despite being on the wrong side of the momentum.

"It was tough giving up the lead," Ferriero said. "But it shows what type of team we have. Harvard showed a lot of heart coming back from down two goals, but we never gave up and we persevered through it to come out with the victory."

The Crimson had apparently watched the Boston University game closely, as they were keying in on Ferriero all game. Everywhere the junior forward went he had a man on him, and he was frequently double-teamed in front of the net. Ferriero, however, said he did not let it effect his game and was willing to pay the price to get the win.
