The Gloucester wrestling team polished off its first regular season as a varsity program Wednesday against Danvers at the Benjamin A. Smith Fieldhouse.
The Fishermen were facing a stiff test against the Northeastern Conference champion Falcons and while they fell short against the much more experienced program 54-18, the team showed plenty of improvements and strong individual performances.
“We have continued to improve,” head coach Matt Swanson said. “We were coming off of a 69-6 loss to Beverly and we were able to get a couple of pins today against the best team in the conference.”
Junior captain Adrian Gedney won via pin at 170 pounds as did Andrew Amaral at heavyweight.
The regular season may be over for Gloucester but the team still has at least two postseason matches.
The Fishermen now turn their attention to Saturday’s Northeastern Conference/Cape Ann League Tournament (8 a.m.). Every wrestler in both conferences will be competing in a tournament style meet and league all stars will be crowned. Gloucester will also compete in the Division 3 North Sectional Tournament on February 15.
