---- — Big Game Alert

The top boys soccer team in the Cape Ann League Large will face off with the top team in the Cape Ann League Small this afternoon when Rockport travels to Masconomet (3:15 p.m.).

The Vikings sport a record of 8-1-1 and are unbeaten in their last eight games, good for first place in the CAL Small. The Chieftains will enter the game with an unblemished 9-0-2 record.

Rockport needs a point to qualify for the state tournament and is fresh off a 2-2 tie with Pentucket on Tuesday. This is a brutal week for the Vikings playing against the best the CAL Large has to offer and head coach Dave Curley says his team will be better after this week because the competition is so tough.

The Chieftains are looking to make it two wins over Cape Ann teams in three days as they beat Manchester Essex 5-0 on Tuesday.

Machado vs. his idol

Baltimore Orioles 20-year-old phenom third baseman Manny Machado’s favorite player growing up was Alex Rodriguez.

He has enjoyed watching A-Rod since the Yankees third baseman played for the Seattle Mariners.

Some people around baseball have compared Machado’s skills to Rodriguez’s.

“I don’t compare myself to anyone but my favorite player was A-Rod,” Machado told The Eagle-Tribune.

When Rodriguez made his major league debut July 8, 1994 at age 18, Machado was just 2 years and 2 days old.

Rodriguez and Machado are going head to head in the American League Division Series.

Faulk held on

to football

@text1:A lot of talk has been about how Patriots running back Stevan Ridley has had a little trouble holding onto the football after he fumbled again late in Sunday’s game.

Former Patriots back Kevin Faulk, who officially retired Tuesday, actually had some trouble holding on to the football early in his career with seven fumbles in his first two seasons (27 games).

However, Faulk fumbled just four times from 2001-11.
