Ben Bichet and Josh Christopher shot an even par 72 at Far Corners Golf Course Thursday, good for a second place finish in the Cape Ann League Open. CAL Large champion Masconomet was the only team to best Manchester Essex, the CAL Small champions.
At the CAL Open each team had two representatives who played best an alternating shot format.
Also on Thursday Bichet was named CAL Small Player of the Year an was an All Cape Ann League selection.
Dan Sanfilippo scored the game winner with four minutes to go burying a pass from Alex Davis to give the Fishermen (6-7-1) an important win. Patrick Kelley was great in goal for Gloucester stopping a Swampscott penalty kick and earning the shutout.
Isaac Randall played well for Gloucester, solidifying the defense after returning from an injury. Calvin Kipruto also played well creating several scoring chances and helping Gloucester to a 29-9 shot advantage.
Gloucester now needs four points over its final three games to qualify for the state tournament, its final three games are against Marblehead (Tuesday), Danvers (Wednesday), and Saugus (Saturday).
Manchester Essex 1
The Hornets move to 14-1 on the year with the win while the Vikings fall to 3-12 after putting up a valiant effort against the class of the CAL Small.
Anna Heffernan scored the games lone goal for Manchester Essex 11:41 into the second half taking advantage of a misplayed ball near the Vikings goal.
Manchester Essex head coach Andrea Slaven credited the play of Maddi Bistrong, who had six saves in goal picking up her ninth shutout of the season. Meghan Conway and Sarah Bekmann also played well for the Hornets.
Rockport Head coach Mary Ryan was very pleased with her team’s performance crediting Maddie Sanfilippo for playing “the game of her career”. The Vikings defender helped hold a potent Hornets offense in check for most of the game and even generated some scoring chances for her team with well executed long passes.
