Gavin, Ilges named Player of the Week at colleges

A pair of Cape Ann collegiate athletes were named Player of the Week at their respective colleges.

Wheelock College women’s lacrosse player Katie Gavin, former Manchester Essex high school star, was named the New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the week of April 22-28, it was announced today by the conference.

For the first time in his career, junior pitcher Lucas Ilges, a former Gloucester high school standout, has been named the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week.

In two games, Gavin, a junior, netted seven goals and added three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Gavin stepped up in one of the most meaningful games of the season for the Wildcats, scoring seven times, while picking up a pair of ground balls and winning two draw controls in the team’s 21-17 victory at Elms College on April 27. The win gave Wheelock a 3-2 record in NECC play to secure the number three seed in the NECC Tournament.

The midfielder has started all 10 matches that she’s appeared in for the Wildcats this season, while netting 38 goals for the third highest single-season total in school history. She’s also assisted on seven tallies to give her 45 points on the year to place second on the team in goals and points. Her 23 goals in league play rank her third among NECC players, while her 26 points against conference foes put her fourth. Gavin leads the squad with five free position goals and also ranks second with 30 draw controls. The second-year player has also scooped up 25 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers. She has registered six multi-goals games this year, including three contests with seven or more tallies. Gavin scored a school-record total of 11 goals vs. Anna Maria College on April 8 and added three assists in that match to tie the school mark for points with 14. A human development, early education major, Gavin has made an impact in other areas of the field, winning four or more draw controls on four occasions, while picking up at least one ground ball in every match.
