Area Roundup: Gloucester softball breaks out offense in win

Gloucester (2-10) had its best offensive performance of the year pounding out 16 hits and dominating play after falling behind 4-0 in the first inning. A huge third inning rally gave Gloucester the lead and it never looked back.

Katie Munroe and Tess Benson led the Gloucester offense with three hits each. Olivia Legendre and Kiley Allen each had a pair of hits while Karina Keenan pitched well on the mound.

Boys Tennis

The Fishermen picked up their third straight win improving to 4-2 on the season.

Victors for Gloucester were Jon Perry at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), Matteo Dolzani at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2), Chris Wile at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0), the No. 1 doubles tandem of Pat Kelly and Cal Cosgrove (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) and George Black and Drew Muniz at No. 2 doubles (6-4, 7-5).

The Hornets continued their outstanding start to the season moving to 7-0 on the season with another shutout win.

Hornets winners were Mike Fuca at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2), Calvin Lamothe at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0), Sam Girian at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-2), the No. 1 doubles team of Jake Rich and Seth Cohen (6-2, 6-3), and Colin Babikian and Josh Christopher at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-3).

The Hornets (2-8) took a 4-3 lead into the fifth inning but the Sachems blew the game wide open with eight runs in the frame. Jake Fitzgerald led the offense with three hits and an RBI. Cory Burnham had a double, a triple and drove in a pair while Corey McCollum and Dominic Cerrone each had two hits and a run scored.

The Hornets improved to 10-0 on the season with another impressive win over a Cape Ann League Large opponent.

No. 1 singles Brittany Collens (6-1, 6-0), No. 2 singles Michelle Fuca (6-0, 6-1), No. 3 singles Kendall McCormick (6-3, 6-2), the No. 1 doubles tandem of Rachel Daley and Chanel Bullock (6-1, 6-1) and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Molly Carlson and Avery St. Sauveur (7-6, 6-3) were all victorious for Manchester Essex.
