Ellsbury, Cameron continue rehab at Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base as he continued his rehab stint with the Portland Sea Dogs.

Mike Cameron, another Boston outfielder on rehab, added a run, a hit and an RBI, but the Sea Dogs fell 6-2 to New Britain on Thursday.

New Britain's Kyle Gibson held the Sea Dogs to one hit through five innings. Ellsbury started a rally with a single in the sixth, then stole second and scored on Cameron's RBI double.

It was the third rehab start this week for Ellsbury, who's been sidelined with cracked ribs since a collision on April 11 in Kansas City. Cameron, who was making his first rehab start with Portland, has been out of the Red Sox lineup since April 19 because of an abdominal strain.

In other Red Sox injury-related news, starter Josh Beckett says he expects to be back in the rotation as soon as his 15-day stint on the disabled list is up.

Beckett was put on the DL on Wednesday with a lower back strain. He hurt himself the night before against the New York Yankees.

Beckett had already missed a start with the same injury. This time, he's hoping to give it more time to heal.

Beckett allowed three earned runs in 4 2-3 innings Tuesday night against the Yankees. He's allowed 29 earned runs in his last 27 innings and, for the season, is 1-1 with a 7.29 ERA.

Tim Wakefield will take his start on Sunday against Philadelphia.

The Boston Red Sox have designated left-hander Scott Schoeneweis for assignment.

He got the news on Wednesday night as he was getting ready for the first anniversary of his wife's death from a drug overdose.

Schoeneweis was 1-0 with a 7.90 ERA in 15 appearances for the Red Sox this season.

Gabrielle Schoeneweis wife died on May 20 last year from an overdose of cocaine and an anesthetic, lidocaine.

The Red Sox needed room on the roster for infielder Angel Sanchez, who was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket and put in the lineup for Thursday night's game against the Minnesota Twins.

The Red Sox have 10 days to trade or release Shoeneweis.
