GHS Football Captains

The Gloucester football team will be captained by five linemen for the 2013 season.

Seniors Connor Adkins, David Dimaio, Jason Lattof, Drew Shairs and Filippo Zappa were recently named captains for next fall’s team. All five were starters in 2012, Shairs and Lattof were Northeastern All Stars at defensive tackle and offensive tackle respectively. Zappa started on the offensive line along with Adkins while Dimaio started on the defensive line and split time between offensive tackle and tight end last season.

The Fishermen have several starters returning from a 4-7 team in 2012.

Lone Player for Hall of Fame

While the Baseball Writers Association of America pitched a shutout in the Hall of Fame voting this year, one ex-player will be inducted in July.

Deacon White, who died in 1939 at age 91, was elected by the Veterans Committee. He batted .312 with a .346 on-base percentage during his career. He led the National Association in hitting in 1875 (.367) and led the National League in 1877 (.387).

His career lasted 20 years including three for the Boston Red Stockings.

He was a third baseman, outfielder and catcher during a time when catchers caught barehanded.

“It is said he was given the name ‘Deacon’ because he really did carry a Bible and embody the qualities that one thinks of in a deacon,” according to

WBC Roster Announcement

The Team USA provisional roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic will be announced on MLB Network’s Hot Stove live this morning at 10 a.m. Co-hosted by Matt Vasgersian and Bill Ripken, who was a member of the ‘09 Team USA coaching staff, Hot Stove will begin at 9 a.m. and break down Team USA and feature an interview with Team USA manager Joe Torre.

Later in the day, the remainder of the provisional rosters for the 16-team field will be announced on MLB Network during a World Baseball Classic Roster Special live at 4 p.m. It will be co-hosted by MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger and Heidi Watney with Dan Plesac and Ripken and will be a one-hour special. It will feature interviews with Team USA pitching coach Greg Maddux and Team USA member/New York Mets third baseman David Wright.
