Area Roundup: GHS boys knock off NEC Large leader Beverly

Boys Basketball

Gloucester 58 Beverly 52

The Fishermen entered the game as big underdogs to a Beverly team that was 8-2 and leading the NEC Large coming into the contest. Gloucester, however, played tremendous team defense and hit several key foul shots down the stretch to take home the win and move to 4-9 on the season. Head coach Bill Cahill called it his team’s best win of the season.

“It was a great team win,” Cahill said. “We played great man-to-man defense and never gave up. It’s nice to get back into the win column by beating a good team.”

Austin Davis led the way for Gloucester with 13 points, Jason Vizena had 12 and Conor Adkins nine. Cahill also credited Davis, Adkins and Jeff Oliveria for knocking down several key free throws in the fourth quarter.

Manchester Essex 60

Pentucket 53

The Hornets move to 7-5 on the year and need just three more wins to get into the state tournament. Manchester Essex outlasted the Sachems on the road Friday with a strong full court press that saw them erase a one point third quarter deficit.

“Pentucket has some tough kids and they were in it the whole game,” Hornets head coach Bryan Shields said. “They got up by one in the third and we went to full court man-to-man defense and never looked back.”

Liam Aldrich led the way for Manchester Essex with 20 points, Max Nesbit and Taylor Ketchum had 14 each.

Triton 65 Rockport 57

The Vikings (4-6) drop their sixth straight game on the road Friday. Rockport took a four point lead into the half but a 21 point third quarter powered Triton to the win.

“We played extremely hard both offensively and defensively,” Vikings head coach Tim St. Laurent said. “Our shots just didn’t fall down the stretch.”

Conor Kuykendall and Adam Balzarini led the way for Rockport with 12 points each, freshman Andrew Waynrynen chipped in nine points.
