Area Roundup: Gloucester track competes at MSTCA Relays

Gloucester competed against the state’s top Class B relay teams Saturday at the James Kalperis MSTCA Indoor Relays.

Gloucester qualified two relay teams for the Class B State Championship meet next month.

The 4x800 relay team of Everest Crawford, Jacob Holscher, Noah Mondello and Matt Carpenter qualified for the Class B meet with a time of 8:14, good for a second place finish. Holscher ran the best leg for the Fishermen running his second leg in a time of 2:01.

“The boys looked great throughout the race and each leg had an opportunity to compete for first place,” Gloucester head coach Jeff Destino said.

The 4x400 relay team also qualified for the state meet as Mark Horgan joined Holscher, Carpenter and Crawford for a time of 3:36. Carpenter and Crawford each ran strong splits of 53 seconds.

The Fishermen (5-9) ran with the momentum they built in Friday’s big win over Beverly and took it into Monday’s game on the road.

“It was a very solid win,” Gloucester coach Bill Cahill said. “The kids were fired up after Friday’s win and they took that momentum into tonights game. We worked hard, took care of the ball and played a good game all around.”

Jeff Oliveria led the Fishermen with 14 points including a big three late in the fourth to seal the win. Austin Davis (10 points) also had a big fourth quarter three while Dylan Aptt and Tyler Ingersoll provided a big first half spark off the bench with six points each.
