Local teams compete in MSTCA Elite Track Meet

The Gloucester boys and girls along with the Manchester Essex track teams each had several strong individual showings this weekend at the Mass. State Track Coaches Association’s Elite Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The event served as a bit of a Class B and All State preview as the best track and field athletes in the state competed.

The Gloucester boys had five runners competing over the weekend and four of them turned in personal best times. The Fishermen were led by three runners who competed in Sunday’s elite field, each of them coming away with a PR.

Matt Carpenter had a strong race in the 600m finishing in seventh place with a time of 1:24.88 which, according to head coach Jeff Destino, was around a second off of Kevin Hurd’s school record time.

Senior captainJacob Holscher competed in the mile and shaved four seconds off of his personal best time finishing in 4:33.28. Noah Mondello also took nearly four seconds off of his best two-mile time finishing Sunday’s race with a time of 9:49.44.

“Noah ran a smart, tough race and as a result ran an impressive time,” Destino said. “Holscher had a great kick in the final 200m to make up a lot of ground and Matt ran a super fast, smooth race that was well executed.”

Senior captain Mark Horgan broke 40 seconds in the 300m for the first time this weekend turning in a time of 39.4 running an aggressive race while junior John Curcuru turned in a time of 7.2 in the 55m dash.

“Horgan is peaking at the right time of the year and John had a really good start and looked good throughout the race,” Destino said. “I can’t say enough about the great work the boys did this weekend.”
