---- — Sox open vs. NU
The Red Sox open up preseason play tomorrow afternoon with their annual double-header against the two local college programs, Northeastern and Boston College. The Sox will play NU in the afternoon and BC at night.
There is a possibility a local could see time against the Sox tomorrow afternoon as Gloucester’s Dylan Maki is a senior captain pitcher for the Huskies. Maki has split time between the starting rotation and the bullpen over the last three seasons. Early on in the 2013 season the Gloucester native has come out of the bullpen. Through three games Maki has made one appearance out of the Huskies bullpen throwing 1 2/3 innings in the team’s win over the University of Houston last Friday.
Northeastern is currently 1-2 on the year.
This will be a huge weekend for Mass. high school basketball and hockey, but there probably won’t be any games played. Instead, the much anticipated parings will be released Friday for boys and girls hoops and Saturday for hockey.
There are four Cape Ann teams in the tournament this winter, Manchester Essex boys and girls basketball, Gloucester girls basketball and Rockport hockey. While the latter three figure to get a lower seed and have to battle their way through the iron of their respective divisions, the Manchester Essex boys could be a top five seed in Division 4 North. All four teams have been staples in the postseason over the past five seasons and all know what to expect and how to win when the stakes are at their highest.
Red Sox manager John Farrell told the media on Tuesday that there is no timetable for the return of both David Ortiz and Mike Napoli to game action. Farrell said Napoli, who has a hip injury, should return before Ortiz, who is still nursing an achillies tendon.
