Friday’s Opening Ceremony of New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium Friday night (gates open at 5:00 p.m.) culminating with the opening football game between Gloucester and Lynn Classical will be free to the community thanks to a donation from the Building Center.

The festivities start at 5:30 p.m. with the Parade of Athletes, the ribbon cutting ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m. and the Fishermen and Rams will square off at 7:30 p.m.

Calling past GHS athletes

All former Gloucester high school athletes are invited to join Friday’s Parade of Athletes taking place during the opening ceremony of New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium.

Those interested athletes can meet on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Gloucester high school softball field.

On the Air

North Shore 104.9’s North Shore Sports Desk will be broadcasting live from George’s Coffee Shop on Washington Street in Gloucester on Saturday morning (8:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m.).

Guests will be Gloucester football coach Tony Zerilli and Gloucester football captains Connor Adkins, David Dimaio, Jason Lattof, Drew Shairs and Filippo Zappa.

Season Opener

The NFL season opens up tonight with the defending champion Baltimore Ravens traveling to the Denver Broncos (8:30 p.m.). Here are some predictions for the upcoming NFL season.

Divisional Champs: AFC East, New England; AFC North, Cincinnati; AFC South, Indianapolis; AFC West, Denver; NFC East, Dallas; NFC North, Green Bay; NFC South, Atlanta; NFC West, San Francisco.

Wild Cards: AFC, Houston, Baltimore; NFC, Seattle, Carolina.

AFC Championship: New England over Denver.

NFC Championship: San Francisco over Green Bay

Super Bowl: San Francisco over New England.

The Patriots come close and can’t close again, but this time it’s because the 49ers are the better team.
