Crunch Time

Locals lead Bates

A trio of Gloucester natives helped the Bates College football team top Tufts this past Saturday 31-23.

Pat George, a Pingree School graduate and a Sr. RB for Bates (1-1) ran for 64 yards and a touchdown Saturday following up a week 1 performance where he had 51 yards and a touchdown in a loss to Trinity. George is the team's leading rusher in the early stages of the 2012 season.

Gilbert Brown, a Sophomore linebacker, notched six tackles (five solo) and a sack in Saturday's win, a week after picking up an interception against Trinity.

Sophomore wide receiver Mike Tomaino, who along with Brown captained the 2010 Gloucester Super Bowl championship team, had a reception for 36 yards in Saturday's win.

Spoiler Alert

The Red Sox can play spoilers this week, sort of. Although the New York Yankees have already clinched a playoff spot, they have yet to clinch the American League East, as the Yankees and Orioles were tied for first place heading into Monday night's games.

The Red Sox have the opportunity to bump the Yankees out of first place and into a one-game playoff for the American League Wild Card, a game that is completely up for grabs.

Although the Sox haven't had anything to play for the entire month of September, they could potentially ruin the Yankees season and end their own season on a rare high note.

Cheap Seats

It's hard to imagine a scenario where anybody would want to see the Astros and Cubs square off as the two teams are two of the worst in all of baseball. But those who are interested in seeing the two teams play can get into Wrigley Field at an incredibly cheap price. is selling tickets for just 19 cents to see the 53-106 Astros clash with the 60-99 Cubs this week.

Both teams have been out of contention since summer broke and both teams will most likely playing minor leaguers in a game that means absolutely nothing.
