---- — ROCKPORT — In a new effort to help high school athletics, the Rockport High boys and girls basketball teams are holding their first ever mattress fundraiser sale on Jan. 12 at the high school.

Tim St. Laurent, the head boys basketball coach, and Steve O’Connor, the head girls basketball coach, are asking the students to help by getting the word out to residents. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the high school. The coaches noted that this kind of event takes place across the country, and has been taking place in the region for the past six years, but this will be a first for Rockport High.

The coaches are excited about this fundraiser for many reasons, including that it does not require the students to sell anything nor do they have to collect money or be responsible for distributing any products. There is no out-of-pocket expense to the basketball teams or the school, they said

All sizes of mattresses are available, including special sizes. Prices start at $199, and there will be 15 to 20 models from which to choose. The mattresses can be delivered or picked up about two weeks after the sale. Savings range from 30 percent to 60 percent below retail, according to the letter sent to basketball players.

“All we ask is that people come in and take a look, and if anyone is thinking about buying a new mattress, if they wait until this event, then it can help out the local students as well,” said Mary Ryan, the Rockport High athletic director.
