Crunch Time

Jr. Olympic Regatta Monday

The Junior Olympic Sailing Festival hits Gloucester on Monday with the best junior sailors ages 8-18 from all across the Northeast participating.

The races begin at noon on Monday and will start at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday in Ipswich Bay. The opening ceremonies will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Annisquam Yacht Club.

Spectators will have a perfect view of the races from Wingaersheek Beach.

The Big 3

With the Los Angeles Lakers trading for center Dwight Howard and only having to give up Andrew Bynum and not Pau Gasol, we now have a three team race for the 2013 NBA Championship.

The Lakers join the defending Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder and defending NBA Champion Miami Heat as the leagues “Big 3” teams. Barring injury it is almost a certainty that the 2013 title will end up in one of those three cities.

The Celtics and Spurs may be close behind but they will not have the firepower to match the Lakers, Thunder and Heat.

Miami has to be considered the early favorite but the young Thunder should also be better this coming season. As for the Lakers, if they get the chemistry down they are right on par with the Heat and Thunder although an aging Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash may be the difference in them not winning a title this season.

It’s tough to see the Lakers take a big step up but this move is great for the NBA as it should be an exciting battle towards the title in 2013.

Jones Impressive

Preseason NFL games definitely don’t mean a whole lot but one can help but be impressed with rookie defensive end and Patriots first round draft pick Chandler Jones.

In his first NFL appearance Jones faced a very good offensive tackle in Jermon Bushrod and he thrived creating multiple quarterback pressures and drawing multiple holding penalties. Jones is just the type of player the Patriots were lacking last season and if he contributes right away watch out for this defense.
