A 'Classic' seafood throwdown

Classic Cooks Catering came away the winner in Thursday’s popular Seafood Throwdown at the Cape Ann Farmers Market.

But the larger winners included groups like the sponsoring North Atlantic Marine Alliance, the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association and its Cape Ann Fresh Catch program, all of whom got to raise awareness of the throwdown’s real message — that fresh, locally caught seafood is healthy, sustainable and that independent local fishermen have and deserve a place at the seafood harvesting table.

The throwdown, an annual feature of the farmers market held each Thursday at Stage Fort Park, features local chefs facing off using a sustainable fish selected by NAMA and then adding elements bought from that day’s farmers market.

Thursday, judges chose Classic Cooks’ dish created with the chosen fish, Ocean Perch, over Sugar Magnolia’s. Sugar Mags, however, can take solace in having won throwdowns five times in the past.
