Man dead after armed confrontation with police

DANVERS —

A 37-year-old man shot by police during an armed confrontation last night at an apartment complex on the site of the former Danvers State Hospital has died, officials announced this afternoon.

Scott Kehoe, 37, of 5113 Kirkbride Drive, Danvers, was armed with a knife and lunged at officers before the shooting, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office said.

Danvers and state police were investigating a report of an alleged assault and attempting to serve warrants for prior court cases when Kehoe approached the officers, armed with a knife, the district attorney's office said.

Kehoe ignored orders to drop the knife, and lunged toward an officer, which led to the use of deadly force to stop him, the district attorney's office said.

Police and firefighters offered first aid, but Kehoe was later pronounced dead at Beverly Hospital, the district attorney's office said. An autopsy will be conducted.
