UMass Lowell invited to Division 1

LOWELL — The University of Massachusetts Lowell is going Division 1 and joining America East Conference.

This will affect all of the school's athletic programs, both male and female, with the exception of its men's ice hockey team, which already competes in Division I Hockey East Conference.

The school announced yesterday that it has accepted an invitation to join the nine-school conference, which is also home to the University of New Hampshire, University of Maine and University of Vermont.

"This is an important day for this university," said Chancellor Martin Meehan, the former seven-term congressman from Lowell.
