---- — A man wanted in two states on various charges that include larceny, robbery and burglary was arrested in Gloucester Tuesday after police detectives received an anonymous tip to his whereabouts here.
Police said 35-year-old Wesley B. Adkins has an “extensive” criminal history that includes warrants out of Virginia and Florida on charges including breaking and entering, larceny from a vehicle, robbery and burglary.
Florida police were already headed toward Gloucester Wednesday to retrieve Adkins and return him to the Sunshine State, city Police Chief Leonard Campanello said.
“These warrants authorized full extradition,” Gloucester Police Lieutenant Joseph Fitzgerald wrote in a report.
Fitzgerald had set up surveillance along with Campanello and Sergeant Sean Conners on Route 128 about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday after receiving the anonymous tip and learning that Adkins was headed to Gloucester along Route 128 North in a blue truck.
The police officers spotted the vehicle in which they suspected Adkins was riding — with a Singer Drill and Blasting logo pasted on its side — and stopped the truck on Essex Avenue. Adkins, riding in the passenger seat, handed over his Florida identification to police and the officers arrested him on three counts of a fugitive from justice charge.
Adkins had been living and working in Gloucester, according to the anonymous tip left on the detectives’ voicemail. The man had lived under multiple aliases in the past, according to police.
The police department in Boca Raton, Fla., published a press statement in November 2009, detailing a bank robbery and subsequent arrest of Adkins after he had walked into a branch of Chase Bank and handed an employee a note that said “I have a gun ... I want money...”
Adkins left that bank with $2,000, but later turned himself in at a Miami-Dade hotel, saying he robbed the bank because he had a drug problem.
Adkins was being held in Middleton Jail Tuesday night and Wednesday until Florida police arrived to extradite him from the state.
