Gloucester Police/Fire: Electrician charged with pliers assault on arborist

Gloucester Police/Fire

An electrician faces a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly began arguing with an arborist working on a neighboring house and used a pair of pliers to cut the arborist’s face.

Steven Joseph, a 51-year-old Sadler Street man, told police he had argued with the arborist over money and the argument came to blows, but that he never used pliers to assault the arborist.

Police arrested Joseph at the Washington Street home where he was working, after having observed cuts on the arborist’s face near his mouth and cheek and hearing the arborist’s story.

A witness told police he had seen Joseph use the pliers as a weapon.

A 30-year-old Pleasant Street man has been arrested and faces five driving charges after allegedly taking a relative’s vehicle without permission, then damaging the vehicle before returning it.

Gregory Simons Campbell, who is also unlicensed, according to police, was charged with unauthorized use of the vehicle, attaching plates to the vehicle, and driving the uninsured, unregistered car on a public way.

Campbell told police he had written some numbers on a piece of paper and attached it to the vehicle as a license plate.

He returned the vehicle with visible damage, police said. The inside of the windshield was cracked, the driver’s side had paint damage all along the side, a front fender was dented, the front bumper was protruding from the vehicle and the hood was popped up.

Campbell told police he had struck a guardrail while reaching to get a pack of cigarettes. He was transported to Addison Gilbert Hospital for treatment after he said he sustained a head injury in the crash; he also told police he had used heroin and taken oxycodone.

He was arrested on the vehicle charges and an outstanding warrant.
