Tournament triumphs

The Boston area sports championship season reached its climax last week when the Red Sox won the World Series, but a number of Cape Ann high school teams are now advancing in their bid for fall tournament titles as well.

Rockport soccer players like Jon Ferrante and Mike McCarthy, pictured here, had plenty to celebrate as the Vikings won their tournament first-round game by a 3-1 count over Lynn Tech Saturday night at Rockport, while the Manchester Essex Regional girls’ field hockey team also advanced over the weekend with a 4-0 quarterfinal triumph over Newburyport Saturday at Manchester’s Hyland Field.

They’re not alone.

The Gloucester High football Fishermen advanced to the semifinals of their Division 3 Northeast sectional playoffs with a 28-13 win over Beverly Friday night at Newell Stadium, and will face Tewksbury in the semifinals on the road on Saturday.

And the Manchester Essex Hornets upset third-seeded Brighton High 42-28 at Harvard Stadium Friday night to earn a Saturday semifinal date at Northeast Regional in the Division 5 North football playoffs.

The Rockport soccer team is actually the first team to try to take step 2 toward a potential title. The Vikings host Hamilton-Wenham tonight at 6 in Rockport, with an eye toward advancing farther in the boys’ soccer Division 4 sectional tournament.
