Ex-Rockport cop turns self in over Southie assault

The former Rockport part-time police officer sought by Boston police since last weekend turned himself in to authorities Thursday morning after police issued warrants for his arrest on charges for allegedly breaking down the door of a South Boston man's home and assaulting him.

Kyle Keating, 26, was formally charged Thursday with home invasion, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon — shoed foot — and destruction or injury of personal property, Boston police told the Times Thursday.

Police had issued warrants for Keating's arrest Wednesday night, and Keating turned himself over to police custody Thursday morning — six days after the alleged Southie incident last Friday. Keating appeared in South Boston District Court later Thursday.

He was released on personal recognizance and ordered to return to court on Aug. 31, Jake Wark, Suffolk County District Attorney's press secretary, said Thursday.

According to Boston police, the incident occurred a week ago today at 4 a.m., when Keating's reportedly estranged 20-year-old girlfriend was allegedly inside of the 48-year-old South Boston home. Police say that Keating broke into the apartment door and assaulted the man, and that Keating and the woman allegedly left together when the victim went to the police station to report the incident.

Police who responded reported a damaged door and signs of a struggle within the home. By Monday, police said they were seeking Keating for questioning, and the warrants for his arrest were issued Wednesday.

Police told the Times Thursday that officers had also "spoken to" Keating's estranged girlfriend about the incident, but police would not say whether charges were pending against her.

Keating worked as a part-time officer in Rockport from December 2009 until he resigned from the force on March 19 to "seek new career opportunities," according to Rockport Police Chief John "Tom" McCarthy.
