Gloucester culture: State panel gets taste of downtown

Leaders of the Massachusetts Cultural Council got a close-up look Thursday at Gloucester’s downtown cultural and historical features.

And a group of local volunteers and city officials are hoping they were sufficiently impressed to recognize that the city should have a Downtown Gloucester Cultural District.

The visit, led by MCC Executive Director Anita Walker, was part of the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s process for determining and designating cultural districts across the state. They were met by city officials such as Jim Duggan, Gloucester’s chief administrative officer who outlined the history of City Hall, and by members of the Downtown Gloucester Cultural District Committee, which has been headed by Robert Whitmarsh and Judith Hoglander of the city’s Committee for the Arts.

The group met at the Cape Ann Museum, then moved over to the City Hall before walking other parts of the city’s downtown, then with the local committee’s supporting partners at Fred Bodin’s Galley on Main Street.

If the state council approves the application, the Downtown Gloucester Cultural District would become the second in the city and the fourth on Cape Ann among just 15 across the state.

The council has already designated a Rocky Neck Cultural District, a Downtown Rockport district and an Essex River Cultural District, all of which received their recognitions last year.
