A model of consistency, Douglass gets to 100 career points

When Conor Douglass first stepped on the ice for the Rockport hockey team he was a nervous eighth grader in the 2008-09 season with obvious upside that had a goal of one day scoring 100 career points.

Last Wednesday against Minuteman, Douglass achieved that goal with a second period score at the Talbot Rink. Entering the contest with 97 career points, Douglass tallied a pair of first period goals to get to 99. Early in the second, the Vikings senior captain completed the hat trick scoring on an Alex Amoroso centering pass to get to 100.

“It was a great feeling, the guys were all supportive of me,” Douglass said. “That was my goal and I met it.”

Douglass has been a model of consistency for the Vikings over the last five seasons. A mainstay on the team’s top two lines the moment he hit the ice, Douglass has reached 100 points thanks to a well-rounded offensive game. The senior captain can beat opponents in just about any way. He is just as likely to make a play in traffic in front of the goal as he is to pick a corner with a wrist shot or make a play with his skating ability.

He is also just as likely to set up a teammate as he is to find the back of the net, as is evident in his 55 career goals and 50 career assists.

“He made an impact right away,” Rockport head coach Derek Papalegis said. “He’s such a dangerous scorer and he earned all of those points.”

Douglass, who is looking to help the Vikings to their fifth straight state tournament appearance, was admittedly a little scared in his first varsity game as a middle schooler, but with the help of older brother Brendan Douglass, a junior on the team that year, he made a seamless transition.
