Snow snarls school schedules, postpones testing

The fifth major snowfall of the season, coming on the last official day of winter, has already deposited more than six inches of snow on some parts of Cape Ann, with more expected before the storm abates later this afternoon.

The snowfall caused a two-hour delay this morning for both Rockport and Gloucester public schools, while the Manchester Essex Regional School District is closed for today. The approaching storm also postponed the schools’ MCAS English composition exams for students in some parts of the state.

National Grid maps did not show any power outages across Cape Ann as of 10:30 a.m., but a street parking ban was put into place in Manchester at 4 p.m. Monday and remains in effect today. While no cars have been towed because of the ban, police said two cars were asked to move today on School Street around 6 a.m. and Central Street at 6:30 p.m.

There was a spin-out on Route 128 southbound by Exit 15 in Manchester, according to police. There was no damage to the car, however, and police were able to assist the motorist. There are no reprotes of any other ajor accidents around Gloucester of Cape Ann’s towns.

The National Weather Service’s winter storm warning carries through 8 p.m. tonight.

We will update this story here at as the storm continues.
