Team science on the waterfront

Maritime Gloucester and the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration have joined together to bring groups of Gloucester elementary pupils on board the schooner Ardelle to learn about ocean science.

The schoolchildren split the day between doing experiments while on the Ardelle and back on shore at Maritime Gloucester.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk stopped by the event during her lunch break Thursday to see what they pupils were doing.

The children out on the Ardelle were learning about invasive species, coastal habitats including sandy and rocky habitats, basic oceanography, and studied plankton. Several NOAA staffers were on board along with Maritime Gloucester educators.

Those pupils on land learned about tidal pools and displacement of air, water, gravity, temperature and density.
