Town Talk: Cultural walk kicks off today

Don’t forget! Today marks the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Essex River Cultural District.

The first cultural district walk-through is today from 2 to 4 p.m., starting at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Main Street.

Take in the local history, live music and food during the ceremony.

Fundraiser honors slain MIT officer

Manchester police Sgt. Stephen Louf was a close friend of Sean Collier, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer who was shot and killed by the alleged Boston Marathon bombers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

The local department has printed more than 1,000 black and blue “Collier Strong” ribbon stickers, and is selling them for $5 each.

All of the money collected from this effort will be used to benefit the Somerville Homeless Coalition, which is one of the largest homeless facilities in the Boston area.

“Sean had a desire to help the homeless, and never got the opportunity before his tragic death,” Louf said. “I really wanted to do something that would make him proud, and choosing to help this organization in his honor really seemed like the right thing to do”.

In the coming weeks, members of the department will be setting up at many local events around the North Shore to make these stickers available to the public, including several locations in Manchester. To purchase your “Collier Strong” sticker (or to make a donation to this effort), you can visit the Manchester Police Department at 10 Central St. at any time. A list of additional sale locations and dates can also be found on the department’s Facebook page;
