A 76-year-old Gloucester woman is facing drunken driving charges after the vehicle she was driving struck a parked car on Maplewood Avenue and pushed it some 75 feet St. Patrick’s Day night.
Police said an officer found Beatrice V. Robbins of Cleveland Place still sitting behind the wheel, with one hand bleeding, when crews responded to the Sunday night crash at 9:04 p.m.
An officer noticed the smell of alcohol on her breath and asked Robbins to perform sobriety tests, three of which she failed.
Robbins admitted to sufficient facts on the drunken driving charge in Gloucester District Court, but the case was continued without a finding to next year, according to court documents. The judge ordered Robbins to pay $600 in court fees and assessments at a pre-trial hearing held Monday.
When police asked Robbins what had caused the accident, she told an officer she was turning onto Cleveland Street and hit a car parked on the corner, police said. But, an officer noted that the vehicle she struck was more than 75 feet from that intersection.
Police said Robbins had struck the rear side of that vehicle, forcing it into a telephone pole.
Robbins told police she had had “a few glasses of wine” at the Rhumb Line Bar & Restaurant on Railroad Avenue before driving that St. Patrick’s Day evening.
The vehicle that Robbins’ car had struck was towed away, and police provided the owner with Robbins’ information. Robbins’ vehicle was also towed because of damage to the front driver’s side of the car, police said.
Police seized and destroyed Robbins’ driver’s license and police notified Robbins of her license suspension.
