Firefighter's final tribute

One of Gloucester’s longest-serving firefighters and a World War II veteran received a hero’s farewell Friday.

The funeral of LeRoy H. “Roy” Garland, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 88, included full military honors and a special tribute from Gloucester firefighters, who sounded a “final recall” for Garland over the emergency scanner while fire trucks joined in the procession from the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home to Beachbrook Cemetery in West Gloucester.

The procession passed the West Gloucester fire station, where Garland had manned Engine No. 5. In all, he served as a city firefighter for 37 years, from 1947 through his retirement in 1984.
