Storm flooding forces road closures in city, Manchester

The rain and fierce winds swirling through Gloucester and Cape Ann’s towns has spurred road closures in Manchester and Gloucester, especially as high tide struck Cape Ann at about 10:20 a.m.

Crashing surf caused Gloucester’s Department of Public Works to block off Atlantic Road about 10:10 a.m. and nearby Good Harbor Beach was submerged in water, with waves lapping the beach end of its footbridge.

In Manchester, road closures began even earlier, with police shutting down Ocean Street about 9:44 a.m. and remaining closed. Police said that street, along with three others, including Boardman Avenue, Raymond Street, and Masconomo Street near Lobster Cove were all temporarily closed down due to flooding water washing over the roadways.

There were also reports of downed power lines, leading National Grid twice to shut off power to Gloucester’s Fort Square between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. That came after aluminum siding ripped from a house in the Fort neighborhood and snagged on the lines, causing sparks.

National Grid also removed a tree branch that had fallen on a Bray Street powerline in West Gloucester about 9:40 a.m., police said. There were, howver, no reports of any storm-related injuries or serious damage as off 12:30 p.m.
