Essex native Ferriero traded to New York Rangers

Benn Ferriero's stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins ended up being a short one.

On Thursday the Essex native and former Boston College standout was traded from Pittsburgh, where he just signed this offseason, to the New York Rangers for forward Chad Kolarik. The Rangers have assigned Ferriero, who signed a one-year two way deal with the Penguins in July, to the Connecticut Whale, the Rangers American Hockey League affiliate.

Ferriero, 25, spent the lockout and the very early part of the 2013 lockout shortened season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the Pittsburgh Penguins AHL affiliate where he posted 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in 34 games this season.

The 2013 season is Ferriero's fourth as a pro. He spent his first three professional seasons with the San Jose Sharks organization appearing in 92 National Hockey League games all with the Sharks scoring 22 points (14 goals, eight assists).

Ferriero made national news in April of 2011 when he scored the overtime game winning goal against the Detroit Red Wings in Game 1 of the Western Conference semi-finals. The goal was his first career playoff point in his first career playoff game, that fell on his 24th birthday.

Ferriero also notched the game winning goal against the Bruins at the TD Garden in October, 2011.

The 5'11" 185 pound winger also won a National Championship at Boston College in 2008, he was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes with the 196th pick in 2006.
