Gloucester Police/Fire: Speeding stops lead to added charges

Gloucester Police/Fire

Police arrested three drivers on either license or warrant charges Wednesday night and Thursday morning, after stopping two of them initially for speeding.

Mark L. Smith, a 54-year-old Patriots Circle man, was arrested after an officer clocked him allegedly driving 81 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone on Route 128 North Thursday about 9:57 a.m.

Smith told police he thought his license might be suspended, and the officer arrested him after confirming that. Smith also faces a speeding charge.

A 35-year-old Wilmington man, Wayne H. Francis, was also stopped for speeding on the Route 128 Extension Thursday about 2:25 a.m. after police clocked Francis driving 52 miles per hour in the 25-mile-per-hour zone between Grant and Blackburn circles.

Francis told the officer he “may possibly” have a warrant, and the officer finding Francis had two active warrants out of Woburn District Court, arrested Francis. The warrants were for shoplifting and a subsequent offense of driving with a suspended license and registration.

The third arrest came just after noon Wednesday, when police ran a Peabody woman’s plate as she drove by on Washington Street and found the woman’s license had been suspended.

Police arrested Nicole L. Peverada, 27, for driving after the license suspension though Peverada told police she was unaware her license had been suspended.

Police helped remove a pallet from the Route 128 North roadway, after receiving a report of the debris Wednesday about 10:18 p.m.
