'Thinking Pink' at GHS

T-shirt effort raises funds for breast cancer research

The hallways were filled with bright spots of hot pink on Thursday at Gloucester High School as teachers, staff and students all donned eye-catching T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Think Pink” — and all in the name of breast cancer research.

The GHS student council raised $600 from the sales of these T-shirts, donated $200 of it to the Rosa Francis breast cancer walkathon, and said that the rest will be given as gift certificates to local cancer patients to help them pay for things like gas and transportation costs to and from medical treatments.

On Thursday, almost 200 students and staffers gathered in the field house, formed a human pink ribbon and recorded cheers, shouting unison “Good morning, Boston!” “We are Gloucester!” and “Danvers, we love you!”

Next week, GHS students — in conjunction with Peabody High School — will be selling blue and white ribbons to help raise money for the Colleen Ritzer Scholarship Fund, created to honor the 24-year-old Danvers High School math teacher who was slain, allegedly by a 14-year-old student, on Tuesday.
