Rockport Rambles: Paddleboards can be vessels too

Although it may be a relatively new hobby, stand-up paddleboarding still has old rules. Town officials would like to remind paddleboarders of the rules and regulations of the water.

When a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) is used beyond a swimming, surfing or bathing area, it is considered a vessel.

According to state Environmental Police, every such vessel must carry one Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device in good and serviceable condition in a readily accessible location.

SUPs on coastal waters when not in a bathing, swimming or surf zone are required have a personal flotation device aboard. SUP users may elect to wear an inflatable device, however the device must be worn on the person to meet legal requirements.

So if you use a boat to find a good stand-up paddleboard or go beyond the beach, be sure to have a life vest.

A tree grows in the meadow

Last week, a tree was planted on town property near a private property line.

The Red Maple was later moved, as planting a tree on town property requires approval from town officials.

For future planting, the Millbrook Meadow Committee is working on a new plan to accept donations for planting a tree; if anyone is interested in contributing money to dedicate a tree, or if you are simply interested in contributing money to help with the meadow restoration, contact any member of the Millbrook Meadow Committee.
