Gloucester's Brett Cahill has already made a lasting impression in just one season at Salem State University.
Cahill was named first team All Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) earlier this month. The Vikings Sophomore catcher took it one step further this week when he was named first team Division III All New England by the New England Interscholastic Baseball Association (NEIBA).
The Gloucester High School graduate and current Salem State star, who transferred to the school this year from UMass Lowell, is one of 15 players from New England Division III schools to be named to the team and the lone Salem State player to be named to the first team.
Cahill helped Salem State to a 31-12-1 record this spring starting 41 games at either catcher or designated hitter. The Vikings season came to an end on May 6 falling to Bridgewater State in the MASCAC finals.
The Sophomore catcher put up big numbers this spring for Salem State compiling a .361 batting average to go along with four home runs, 42 RBI and 41 runs scored. His .361 batting average is second best on the team amongst regular starters while his home runs RBI are tops on the team and he is second in runs scored. Cahill's 42 RBIs are also the best in the entire MASCAC.
His best individual performances of the season came on April 18 against UMass where he put together four hits, a pair of doubles and a pair of RBIs. Cahill had three hits each in wins over Becker College, MCLA and Westfield State in April driving in three runs in the Becker game.
Western Connecticut's Conor Bierfeldt and his .430 average, 10 home runs and 50 RBIs was named Division III Player of the Year. Cahill's teammate pitcher Matt Kerr was named third team All New England, the MASCAC Pitcher of the Year posted a 9-0 record this spring.
