City man, 43, was rider killed in crash

A 43-year-old husband, father and local machinist has been identified as the motorcyclist who was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a delivery truck Thursday on Essex Avenue.

Gloucester Police on Friday confirmed that Stephen Bennett of The Heights of Cape Ann was the rider who died at the scene after his cycle and a UPS truck crashed on Route 133, or Essex Avenue, in West Gloucester.

According to Gloucester Police, Bennett's wife Tammy was in a vehicle just behind her husband's motorcycle when the truck apparently pulled onto Essex Avenue from Fernwood Lake Avenue and the crash occurred.

Lt. John McCarthy said Friday that Bennett's wife witnessed the accident, and tried unsuccessfully to revive him by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation at the scene.

The accident occurred about 4 p.m. Thursday, when the UPS truck was exiting Fernwood Lake Avenue and it and Bennett's Harley-Davidson collided as Bennett was headed toward downtown Gloucester.

Massachusetts State Police are continuing to investigate the crash through an accident reconstruction team. No charges tied to the crash had been filed as of Friday, and there is no indication that any are pending.

Bennett had been employed as a machinist until about two years ago at Gloucester Engineering, officials there confirmed Friday.

The identity of the UPS driver has not been released.
