Families needed to host Japan ‘sister city’ visitors

Five students from Gloucester’s sister city of Tamano, Japan, will visit this month and organizers are running out of time looking for homes for the young teens.

The Tamano homestay group’s visit has been part of the city’s tradition for at least 17 years. During the 12-day homestay, from July 24 to Aug. 4, the students are kept busy from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the week, and are with the host families evenings and weekends.

There will be five students, three girls and two boys from ages 14 to 17, and a 33-year-old male chaperone.

“The people who have opened up their homes have found it to be a rewarding experience for both the host families and the Tamano students,” said Bob Whynott, one of the visit’s organizers. “There have been some families who have hosted students for a few years in a row.”

There will be a welcoming party for the homestay group at the home of John and Angela Sanfilippo, and a farewell party at the home of Bob and Pat Whynott for the Tamano visitors and both past and present host families.

Anyone who would like to help out in any way, including being a host family, helping find a host family, or helping out with the parties, should contacWhynott at 978-283-8230 or robert.whynott@verizon.net; and Angela Sanfilippo at 978-281-0650 or asanfilippo@gfwa.org.

“Please help us keep this worthwhile program going,” said Whynott.
