Catching a wave at Goose Cove

Dad, kids revive a Goose Cove tradition

No, Vivian Marchant, 9, wasn’t water skiing Tuesday, as it might appear.

She was riding her belly board in the sluiceway while tethered to a railing at the Goose Cove Causeway, when high tide sends the water shooting in from and out of the Annisquam River.

In doing so, she wasn’t just trying to beat the heat of a 90-degree day – the kind of days we can also expect today, Thursday and Friday. She, her father, Gloucester firefighter Greg Marchant, and her sister, Violet, 6, were all reviving a Goose Cove neighborhood tradition that Greg Marchant recalled from his youth.

Greg Marchant said he built the “body board” that closely resembles the one he used to use, and he closely watched and supervised his daughters and some of their neighbors enjoying the ropes Tuesday afternoon.

Greg said he hadn’t done “belly boarding” in that spot in the last 10 years, but Vivian said it was refreshing and Greg said she picked up this skill very quickly.
