Dedicating the Stephen J. Amaral

For years, the late Gloucester police patrolman Stephen Amaral captained the department’s harbor patrol boat, responding to waterfront emergencies and other calls in Gloucester harbor and in the Annisquam River.

Now, that boat has been formally christened the Stephen J. Amaral in his honor.

The city formally dedicated the boat to Amaral during ceremonies held Saturday at the Gloucester Harbormaster’s dock, with the late patrol boat skipper’s mother, Janet Amaral, among those participating.

Amaral served 32 years on the Gloucester police force up until his death in March 2011. A graduate of Gloucester High School, he also served in the U.S. Navy, having entered the service in 1967.
