Local boater survives NH crash

A Gloucester man and four colleagues all escaped injury Monday when they were tossed from their vessel and then saw it crash off a popular lake in Holderness, N.H.

According to the New Hampshire State Police Division of Marine Patrol, 25-year-old Jonathan Janes of Gloucester was driving a speedboat in Little Squam Lake with three friends Monday at around 12:30 p.m., while two others were tubing behind.

Police said that while towing the tubers, Janes turned the boat abruptly so it took on water and shifted the boat, ejecting him and the three passengers.

Neither Janes nor the three people in the boat were wearing life vests, but all began to swim to shore and were picked up by fellow boaters.

The two people tubing stayed with the boat as it continued on its course, but they also eventually jumped ship as the boat approached the shoreline and slammed into a tree.

New Hampshire State Police said Tuesday that although the boat was described as a total loss, there were no injuries. The people in the tubes were wearing life jackets, police said.

As of press time Tuesday, New Hampshire State Police could not readily identify the other people in the boat or where they are from. Officials did, however, issue safety warnings to those who use the state’s lakes.

“(State police) recommends that all vessel operators wear the boat’s safety lanyard when underway and wear life jackets,” the police statement read.

Little Squam Lake spans roughly 400 acres and is centered in Holderness, a small town of roughly 2,100 nestled in Grafton County.
