Steps forward for library project

The Sawyer Free Library’s $750,000 landscaping and site project is in full bloom these days.

Workers this week installed the forms that will become steps to the Dale Avenue facility, literally the latest steps in a project that began with clearing a large, diseased maple tree in May and will continue for several months.

The first phase of the project focuses on rebuilding the handicapped-access ramp now leading off Dale Avenue to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, with the second phase, now under way, including the construction of a small amphitheater and steps into the property from Dale Avenue and a later phase to include construction at the back of a paved parking lot with 35 to 36 spaces, including two for handicapped parking for employees and patrons.

The project is being funded through private donations and a capital drive, in addition to drawing $75,000 from the city’s Community Preservation Act revenues as approved by the Gloucester Community Preservation Committee, the City Council and Mayor Carolyn Kirk.

The overall work, ending with the construction of the new parking lot in back, is projected for completion this fall.
